April always seems to mark when springtime begins to warm up in my neighborhood. I find my palette also begins to lean towards lighter and more refreshing flavors, versus the heavy and dark flavors preferred in the colder months. With that in mind, I’ve decided to make this month’s theme “April Sours”

And what better way to kick off this springtime theme with a cocktail inspired imperial kettle sour from New Glory Craft Brewery: Mine. Mine is brewed with pineapple, orange, and lemon purées, shredded coconut, and “Blue Hawaiian” drink mix.

The Blue Hawaiian cocktail typically consists of rum, blue curaçao, pineapple juice, coconut cream, and lemon juice. The color of this beer is quite shocking, as it is a deep bluish green. Seems so artificial that it may turn off those who are seeking a more fresh fruit taste. Despite the bizarre color, this beer is actually delightfully fresh and tropical without any overly sweet artificial flavor. Up front is the coconut which offers a fluffy creaminess. Following in wonderful cohesiveness are the pineapple and citrus purées, that are more on the sweeter side of tart. Rounding out the flavor is this mysterious blue drink mix that seems to act as a background for the fruit to stand out on.

Don’t let the odd color dissuade you from trying this one! Or if you happen to like funky colored drinks, this is for you! Mine by New Glory is a great example of the wild things that can be done within the sour style of beer.
