Dogfish Head Brewerys Higher Math - Review by: @Robyn_Seto

Dogfish Head Brewerys Higher Math - Review by: @Robyn_Seto

Let’s bid farewell to another year with a special rarity: Dogfish Head Brewery’s Higher Math. This beer was a special limited release produced in 2015 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the brewery’s first beer. This Belgian style golden ale is fermented with sour cherry juice and cacao nibs and comes in at a stumbling 17% ABV. It’s been patiently aging in the beer fridge for six years.

Despite being a golden ale, the color is a dark amber from the cherry juice and cacao nibs. The aroma is deeply rich with cherry. This is a very heavy bodied beer. There’s an incredible thickness in the mouthfeel. At first sip, it’s quite sweet and almost syrupy. The extremely high ABV dries and curbs the sweetness before it becomes cloying. It rides the line of being too overpowering on the palate, but rounds off before it reaches the peak. This beer really reminds me of something closer to a wine or mead because the flavors are so rich and the ABV is so high. Hints of chocolate emerge as the sip dries and adds a silky smooth background for the next burst of cherry. The cherry flavor itself is completely natural tasting, not at all like neon red maraschino cherries. It has a slight jamminess to it, similar to the cherry filling of a black forest cake. Despite the 17% ABV on this beer, Higher Math has almost no detectable alcoholic nose or taste. However, there’s no mistaking the heat that begins to rise from a boozy beverage. It’s definitely a beer you want to share.

Say goodbye to 2021 in style. Although this beer isn’t available for sale anymore, there are lots of gems out in the craft beer world worth holding onto for some time. Take a chance on something that you think might age well. Keep it in a cool, dark place and come back to it some time. Maybe even to ring in a new year down the line.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year! Enjoy your booze responsibly. 2022 will be another year full of great beer!
