Prairie Artisan Ales Lemon Slice - Review by @Robyn_Seto

I can’t hide the fact that I’m a huge fan of Prairie Artisan Ales. Based out of McAlester, Oklahoma, this brewery has a very contemporary take on the beers they produce. They produce a wide variety of styles, but seem to have a penchant for sours and stouts. Their stouts are usually higher ABV (10%+) and very rich, making them great for aging. I’m excited for the weather to cool down again and indulge in some of the Prairie stouts I’ve been hiding away in the beer fridge. Sours are another specialty of Prairie’s, which are more suited for warm weather due to their fresh ingredients and flavors. Sours are typically lower ABV (5%+) in contrast to the heavy stouts. This duality means Prairie beers are available to enjoy in every season! (I promise you, I was not paid to endorse this brewery.)

While the weather is still hot, I couldn’t wait to try Prairie Artisan Ales’ Lemon Slice sour ale. Last week’s beer, Just the Juice, was also produced by Prairie. Even though this week’s beer is also in the sour family of styles, Just the Juice was a fruited imperial sour and Lemon Slice is a fruited sour ale. The main differences between them are the imperial style indicates a higher ABV and heavier body. The fruited sour also, as you might expect, uses fruit in the brewing process.

Lemon Slice is brewed with lemon zest, lemon juice, and vanilla. It’s wonderfully juicy and tart, reminiscent of pressed lemonade or a lemon drop. This sour packs a ton of flavor into just 5.2% ABV, and is full-bodied yet not heavy. There’s a definite freshness to the lemon flavors that walk up to the line of extreme before the vanilla pleasantly rounds it off. It’s distinctly tart and sweet without becoming cloying or overwhelmingly acidic. Very fresh and very lemony. I wouldn’t recommend it with a meal, but might be nice with some mixed nuts or other slightly salty snack.

I thoroughly enjoyed Lemon Slice, and highly recommend it for lovers of lemonade. Summer is drawing to a close in the coming weeks, but there’s still lots of time to enjoy sours!
