Bare Bottle Brewing Cos Key Lime Pirate: Review by @Robyn_Seto

This crazy concoction is the work of Bare Bottle Brewing Co. based out of San Francisco, CA.

Key Lime Pirate is a fruited gose style beer. What is a gose? Pronounced “go-zuh,” it is a German style of beer brewed with malted wheat, coriander (don’t worry, no soapy flavor), and salt water. Gose style beers tend to be sour like citrus, herbal/floral, and salty to some extent. Key Lime Pirate, being a fruited gose, features the use of limes in the brewing process. The flavors are very different from your run-of-the-mill ale as there’s virtually no flavor influence from any hops used in the brewing process. The style allows brewers freedom to experiment with unorthodox flavor combinations such as those featured in Key Lime Pirate: key lime, vanilla, and cinnamon blend to evoke the taste of a slice of key lime pie.

This beer is not for the novice beer drinker...unless you love sour candy. It is an explosion of sour that doesn’t quit as you sip it. The key lime is at the forefront of the flavor that’s refreshingly natural tasting. The vanilla and cinnamon emerge as the tart lime dries out, and it becomes a lovely representation of a piece of key lime pie. But in a sour beer! Each sip is as shocking to the palette as the very first. I don’t want to say that it’s a chore to drink this beer, but it is very sour and I had to take my time with it even though I really liked the flavor.

Zero bitterness. I suggest sharing one with a friend because I don’t think I could personally handle all 16 ounces of this lime jolly rancher sour beer.

Watch out, this one gave me a little heartburn.
