Top 2018 Movies not Reviewed: Leave No Trace

Leave No Trace was a ‘fly under the radar’ indyriffic gem distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. So under the radar, that I hadnt realized it had been released when it had. And where it was playing was a place so inconspicuous that while I had walked by this theater often, I had no idea it existed. And so Landmarks Opera Plaza Cinema in San Francisco would host my 85th and Final Moviepass Experience.

Based on a 2009 book My Abandonment, Peter Rock wrote a story about a 13 year old girl living with her father in an Oregon State park. It would be adapted into a screenplay by Anne Rosellini and Debra Granik with Granik directing it. Granik, has only directed a handful of other projects, her most mainstream movie being Winters Bone with Jennifer Lawrence. And if Mainstream isnt the correct adjective, it is her most notable before Leave No Trace.

This movie has already been “snubbed” by the Hollywood Foreign Press for any Golden Globe nominations, and while a movie about a War Vet with PTSD might bring down the party a notch, it will be an absolute travesty if the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences doesnt nominated this for multiple awards including Best Adaptation, Best Actress and just maybe even one of those Ten Best Picture slots.

Leave No Trace is one of the, if not THE best movie of 2018, and it is also the saddest movie of year. Most of the time you are just watching this Father and Daughter team living out their days in the state park and its when civilization comes to then and interrupts their lives that the movie becomes intense. And when our lead sees that there is a life that can be held steady even by the smallest thread, sadness and confusion takes over when we realize not everyone is still ready to adapt back into society on any scale.

I absolutely would have given this August release Five strong Blueberries out of Six.
