The Girl in the Spiders Web: A New Dragon Tattoo Story: Review by @Kush_Hayes

Thankfully only the title of The Girl in the Spiders Web: A New Dragon Tattoo Story is long and dumb. The movie, while only empty calories, are enjoyable and entertaining.

Disclaimer: Ive never seen another of the Dragon Tattoo stories. I know of the original trilogy. I know the United States remade an adaptation of the first one. So I have no idea if this is Part Two or Part Four.

I do know this is a new actress playing the lead role of Lisbeth Salander and all the advertisements Ive seen for this, print or video have been pushing the character harder than they have been pushing the actress portraying her.

Claire Foy, who just had another movie last month with First Man, playing Janet Armstrong wife to the titular astronaut. Shes good in this. Again, I have no other comparison to put her up against, but I believe that shes a formidable computer hacker who can handle herself in singles hand-to-hand combat against a bunch of barrel chested henchmen.

Part of the empty calorie part is they put her in several “blocked” topless shots where the illusion of her being naked is there, but again, its just an illusion and feels needless. And then theres the part where everyone knows of this vigilante who avenges women being battered and abused domestically by men, they even know her identity, but she walks around freely. Free to the point where shes at her favorite crowded “underground” club or venue, but takes time to fetal-sulk in incredibly well lit window porthole displaying her silhouette while she chain smokes.

Kush, Whats this even about?
Stephen Merchant, developed an All-In-One app for the United States that can control ALL the Nuclear missiles around the world. He regrets making it. Hires Lizbeth to steal it from the Feds. Who then has it stolen from her, but it turns out the Swedish Government as well as Lizbeths evil sister. From the trailer, you think this is a much bigger part of the movie, but it feels more like a side detail. As you can imagine Lizbeth takes it upon herself to get the App back, theres an autistic kid involved as well as journalist who clearly ingests large amounts of soy despite having a history with our main character.

Overall, very entertaining movie. Nothing to write home about. But I am now interested in seeing the previous movies.
