Bumblebee: Review by @Kush_Hayes

Bumblebee: Review by @Kush_Hayes

Start off the review strong. Travis Knights Bumblebee is the best entry of the live action Transformers movies ever made.
But its still a movie based on a childs toy from 30 years ago intended today for kids between 8-14. And, as a whole, its only ok.

Explain what you didnt like. At 1 hour 54 minutes this should be 20-25 mins shorter. Get rid of the silly friendzone recruit. Get rid of half of the silly family storyline. Get rid of the “revenge” storyline. Make this a very simple, girl discovers a robot and must help it save the world story. However I think this may be the best compromise we could have gotten from this movie.

Ease into the warm middle part. A lot of this movie, independent of the story, is all based on 80s Nostalgia. 1987 specifically. From music, to TV shows, to brand names. We even get an easter egg from the original Transformers (animated) Movie. Unfortunately I think it leans in hard on that nostalgia. They make up a fictional California town for this movie to take place in, but its Santa Cruz, home of Joel Schumachers The Lost Boys from 1987.

Take it home on a happy note. Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight was a great choice for this movie. He absolutely loved this property as a kid growing up, most likely in 1987.  Knight, spearheaded most of the design of this film and recognized what people hated about those last five movies. Simpler is better. When a robot changes form or transforms if you will, you dont need to see 1000 gears spinning and making the whole process invasive. Bumbleebee Transforms many many many times in this and its simple, and you see what happens, and you didnt need to recognize any spinning cogs as it does. Aside from the opening battle on Cybertron, FYI everyone on Cybertron looks great, there are only four transformers we deal with on earth, you know who is fighting who and everything is just simple to follow. Hailee Steinfeld plays her part more tolerable that Shia LaBouf. John Cena makes a great straight man military adversary. This movie brings the franchise back to a family level movie.
