Oceans Abate: Review by Kush Hayes

Oceans Abate: Review by Kush Hayes

If the objective of this movie was to recreate the feel of the modern “traditional” Oceans movies, then Oceans 8 starring Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchet scores an A+.

If this movie was trying to be a fun diamond heist movie, in the “tradition of Oceans 11” then it isn’t very good.

What’s the difference?

This is a pretty cookie cutter of the world its in. Sandra is George, Cate is Brad, etc etc. If you love any of the first three Oceans 11 movies, you’ll probably really enjoy this, if not love it. I hope you do.

No one in their role is bad. Even Awkwafina, whose name surprisingly is recognized by the spell check on #Google, yet I still question what it was that drew them to cast her. It feels like anyone really could have played her part. But I think you could almost make that argument about everyone in this movie.

Back to the world we’re in, Danny Ocean is “dead”, his sister Sandra, has been working on her next con for nearly six years while she was locked up in prison after a con gone wrong where her partner/boyfriend immediately betrays her.

Now on parole, where her parole officer never becomes a thing, she has a plan to rob the Toussaint Necklace, which is 6lbs of diamonds. She grabs her crew, there's plenty of product placement of fashion and housewares, even Tinder gets a 90 second commercial. “...If you like him all you need to do is Swipe Right!”. This is pretty much when I was kind of checked out of the movie. This had the chance to get a really good review from me til we got to this scene between Awkwafina and Mindy Kaling. They didn’t write it, but someone should have known better.

The con that has been worked on for six years gets altered as we go along yet still gets to the point where everything is just too convenient and you feel there were never really any consequences to begin with.
